Abstract
The intermedial approach to the short stories by Michael Yatskov is used in the article. This approach makes it possible to reveal how painter’s component is embodied in artistic thinking of the author. It’s highlighted that personal encounters with artists, knowledge of their biographies, creative lives used to have a significant influence on the creative formation of the writer. Attention is focused on that how the atmosphere of rivalry between painters, authors’ sympathies and antipathies is reflected in novels. It is proved that the prototype of Korney Borsuk from the essay ‘Death of the God. A studio with a hammer’ was Ivan Trush, to whom the writer demonstrated the negative attitude. The paper draws our attention to the fact, that all characters often appeal to the canvases for supporting their thoughts, showing a good knowledge of art rarities. The article reveals the means to achieve the visual effect in the writer’s works, the function of intermedial inclusions confirming author’s diversity of interests: from Antiquity era – up to the latest trends and tendencies in the art. Numerous literary correlations in the novels demonstrate a good knowledge of art history, creative biographies of the painters of different times and peoples: Lyudomyr-Lyudvyg Benedyktovych, Artur Grottger, Ivan Trush, Julian Pankevych, Aubrey Beardsley, Mathis Nithardt and others. The paper elucidates that artistic versatility has become a landmark of the twentieth century. Figurative-expressive potential of M. Yatskov’s artistic expression is enriched due to his mastering the means of adjacent arts.
