Abstract
The article examines the issue of understanding between Ukrainian and Polish cultures, using Anna Gruver’s novel 'Nerukhomist' as a focal point. The literary text emphasizes the communicative gap between women who are strangers in Polish society and, therefore, try to establish a symbolic intergenerational connection between them, based on their otherness and alienation. The article interprets communicative strategies, in particular silence and fragmented language, as signs of the characters’ traumatized identities. Aging serves as a significant turning point for the protagonist, as well as her mental illness, which delves into her interaction with a young Ukrainian woman who communicates with the world through academic texts and concepts. The discourse of aging and illness becomes central to the analysis of the novel, demonstrating the vulnerability of the human body and consciousness. In her book, Anna Hruver situates the relationship between the two women within a broader geopolitical context, employing the metaphor of a house, whose facade conceals the true horrors that only an outsider can notice.
